Generation Convergence (download the poster)

For the first time in history, today's work world is comprised of four distinct generations: the HEROIC, the OPTIMISTIC, the RESOURCEFUL, and the DETERMINED. These four generations are working side by side, but for the most part they do not understand that the behaviors and work patterns of their colleagues are not intended to irritate and aggravate them. Managing the friction and conflict created by this age-diverse work force is an ever-increasing challenge in the workplace. Many of the disagreements and misunderstandings that arise among team members are a result of differences between the generations, differences in values, attitudes to work, workplace relationships, and communication skills and styles.

Leaders must strive to create environments where mission and expectations mesh with needs and wants; failure to do so will have significant consequences. In the coming years, retention of the workforce will become one of the key challenges for employers. It is vital for future success and survival to find ways to maximize the performance of every individual.

Discussion questions:

  1. How cross-generation friendly is your team? How tolerant/accepting of differing viewpoints and perspectives is your team?
  2. How do you keep individuals engaged and connected to maximize their performance?
  3. What strategies are in place to motivate and retain individuals?
  4. How can you leverage generational differences for future success?
